Ultrasound: Ultrasound therapy

Ultrasounds are high frequency acoustic vibrations not perceptible by the human ear.

In the therapeutic field , the application of ultrasound in human tissues results in a high-frequency cellular and intercellular massage action. Furthermore, ultrasound can be used in immersion; the head is immersed in water next to the area to be treated.

The tissues irradiated with ultrasound in turn enter into vibration, with consequent energy expenditure and heat production. These manifestations are summarized in the biological effects of ultrasound, mechanical effect and diathermic effect:

- The Mechanical Effect : It is developed through the rhythmic compression and decompression of tissues. The particles of a tissue subjected to the vibrating area are all alternately stressed with the same acceleration and speed.

- The Diathermic Mechanism: Hypotizable biological effects begin to be possible with an energy of 1 watt / cm2. As sound travels through tissues it is absorbed and converted into heat. The temperature distribution produced by ultrasound in tissues is unique among all forms of deep heating, this effectively determines a relatively small temperature rise on the surface of
tissues and has a greater probability of penetration into the musculature and soft tissues compared to diathermy produced with microwaves or short waves.

- Chemical Effect : Linked to a characteristic phenomenon induced by ultrasound, "cavitation", which is explained by the liquid components of the tissues where the small gaseous bubbles present tend to increase in size, and results in oxidation and polymerization processes. , destruction of macromolecules, etc.
